About Us:
Welcome to Alternative Motive.
Alternative Motive is a monthly music newsletter that focuses on today’s alternative music scene. Each edition of the newsletter consists of music-related feature stories, timely opinion pieces, and playlists. Click here to subscribe.
Although “alternative” is a broad genre in music, Alternative Motive chooses it with intention. With genres constantly changing, it would be limiting to run a publication with only one niche in mind. Focusing on “alternative music” means our coverage is of any music that falls outside of the mainstream. We love genres that are rock-adjacent, including pop rock, pop punk, and indie, but we are open to great music of all kinds. Most importantly, Alternative Motive aims to give space to the artists and communities that mainstream publications cannot.
Established in Toronto, Canada in 2023, Alternative Motive is committed to focusing on the Canadian alternative scene. We understand the importance of embracing local art and the people that surround it. That said, we also realize the Canadian scene does not exist inside of a bubble. We will also cover events and discourse impacting the alternative landscape worldwide.
Alternative Motive is proud to demonstrate good journalism and celebrate diversity in everything we do. More than anything, we are excited to tell the stories of our scene.

Our Mission
Alternative Motive is dedicated to following principles of good journalism, always looking towards being truthful, factual, and fair. We work to keep our content fun, casual, and accessible to reach audiences everywhere. Alternative Motive values diversity and inclusion and is committed to covering underrepresented communities. Through leading by example, we aim to be a model to both the journalism and music industries of how they can increase inclusion.
About the Author:
Kendra Seguin is a storyteller and self-proclaimed “professional fangirl” based in Toronto. Her longtime love for the arts and entertainment industries along with her passion for storytelling led her to create Alternative Motive in 2023 as part of her final Bachelor of Journalism Capstone project at Toronto Metropolitan University.
Kendra has experience in many forms of journalism, including written, audio, photo, video, and interactive media. Her love for music is evident everywhere, from her “Kendra’s Song of the Day” series on TikTok, to the album artwork she paints on her nails, to the concerts she always seems to watch from the barricade.
